Logo_lolo003_1  On Wed 16th August I am going to be the MC & perform at a launch for a fundraiser for the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town.  Their campaign is called Operation Theatre

and they are raising 50million rand in order to build a new operating wing to the hospital. They have already raised a staggering 40million, so next wednesday is going to be about encouraging the community to help raise the final 10million.

The Red Cross Children's Hospital is the last children's hospital left in South Africa and they do invaluable work for all child related diseases and trauma - from burns to kidney & liver transplants...

In a briefing about what I will need to do as the MC at the event, I was taken on a guided tour of the current facilities. The operating theatres are located in the original hospital and are 50 years old and require that the surgical team wheel in the equipment they need for each op. There are no waiting rooms and parents have to sit the corridor while their children are operated on.  They currently do close on 800 operations a month with an unbelievably long waiting list.

Even with archaic conditions and equipment, the team of doctors at the hospital do life saving work. Topmenu_picI got to meet one of them, and he had such a twinkle in his eye when he spoke of the possiblity of 4 new operating theatres and the difference they would get to make. It was humbling to meet someone whose entire life is about saving other people's lives. And not just people - really small children. His whole focus is on keeping them out of pain & getting them home as quickly as possible.

My heart just broke in the burns unit. I felt so ineffective not being able to just do something that could stop the unnecessary accidents that happen daily in the townships. We then went up to the kidney / liver unit and met all the kids waiting for transplants and on dialysis machines. Some of them are so small and still have a big smile on their face when people walk into the ward - it really undid me.

I am very excited to be able to contribute in a small way next wednesday to help raise awareness for the hospital and the incredible work they do! I am realising that this is really my calling - to be a voice beyond just being a singer. It is unchartered water for me, so I have to just take it one step at a time. I feel moved by what I can contribute with my work, so all in all I am very excited.
