November 10, 2006 - Miracles so far:

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
Well, I am getting clearer that the only way to keep moving forward with excitement and conviction is to look back along where you have come and give thanks for everything that has gotten you so far already. Last week my team and I spent a few hours writing down all the miracles around this album project...

We are grateful for....

  1. Verity's family sponsoring 3/4 of the website to get things started

  2. World-Wide creative taking 1/4 of the cost and doing the project on risk

  3. Accountants offering...

November 08, 2006 - Darling Festival

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
Darlingfestival A few weeks back Kirstin (my magic project manager) and I headed off to the Darling Voorkamer Festival (rough translation - Darling Front Room Festival).  This rather unique and eccentric festival takes place in - you guessed it - Darling, and the premise is that every show (from theatre, to music to comedy) takes place in the front rooms/lounges of various residents homes.

You buy a ticket that includes 3 shows but what you get to see is a total surprise. So we were assigned to the red rou...

October 31, 2006 - Pls Help Sisanda Finish Studying

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
Banner Eden Campus is trying to raise the sum of R11 460 to release one of their students, Sisanda Joko, from a debt to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Sisanda enrolled at NMMU in 2004 in the belief that she would qualify for financial assistance. However the funding was not granted and Sisanda left NMMU at the end of 2004 with a debt of R8360.

She is now enrolled full time at Eden Campus and since she is not currently employed, has been unable to pay off the debt. With interest running a...

October 26 - 2006 A Song For My Father

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
I was 24 years old and living in London when my father suddenly fell ill. The emergency flight home was possibly the most traumatic 12 hours of my life. I was just reaching the age where I could appreciate how much I could learn from my parents and that perhaps I didn’t know everything. I couldn’t fathom life without him, but by the time I got home I only had a few days with him before he passed away.

As a songwriter, I took my pain to my beloved piano and journal. What surprised me mos...

They were celebrating the year they have had and letting their sponsors and board members see the next phase of housing that they are building for women going through the centre.

I got to hand over 7 INTEC Bursaries to the centre director Synovv Skorge and look forward to hearing how it goes with the women who sign up to stu...

Mimi_002Yesterday my manager (more like Fairy Godmother) Donna met up with Mimi Ntenjwa (our first LYD Artist) in Joburg to hand over a R10,000 Intec Bursary for Mimi to study PR.

I am so excited to be able to help her a little more on her road as a singer and to make sure she realizes her dreams. She wants to study PR so she is clued on publicity and marketing going forward in the music industry. She is also aiming to start a free recording facility in the townships and will need extra business ski...

October 12, 2006 - Meet my band...

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
I am starting to get a more full time band together which I am just loving! It is awesome to meet for rehearsals and work on the songs and watch them grow.

The longest standing members of my band are the super chilled, unbelievably talented bass player & drummer Helder Gonzaga & Tony Paco from Mozambique.

TonyHelderveeHelder has been with me since 2004 and truly is the backbone of my band on stage. He knows my songs inside out but still manages to bring something new and fresh every time we play. Tony ...

October 11, 2006 - Singing in The Rain

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
Tonyveenelsonhelder_1 On September 30th we played a show at the V&A Amphitheatre from 5-6pm. Despite the fact that Cape Town is supposed to be in full Spring mode - it was a freeeeeeeeeeezing  day.  We arrived at the Waterfront around 4pm to start getting ready, and the place was deadly quite with everyone keeping indoors.

The band and I were stomping our feet to try and keep warm and it felt like it was going to be a tough gig... Amazingly though, once we started playing people came out and braved the cold wit...

Here's a complete miracle that happened recently....

Educor_logo I approached the Hennie Louw, the MD of Educor (the largest private education facitility in Africa www.educor.co.za ) to see if I could possibly give a bursary away at a woman's center I was singing at.

New_02_1The response I got was overwhelming! After reading about what the centre does, he offered me 14 Bursaries valued at R5000 each to award! The power they will have to change these women's lives is beyond description.  I was so blown away ...

October 06, 2006 - MIMI continues to Live Her Dreams

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
Mimivee_jhbOn Saturday 2nd September, Donna and I headed down to Zoolake to watch Mimi Ntenjwa (my first Live your Dreams artist) sing at the Jazz on the Lake Festival.

Unbeknowns to us, it is a huge annual event so on our way we discovered all the roads were blocked. It was hectic! A rather friendly policeman told us we needed to get access passes from the Rosebank Policestation which sounded like a huge effort. He then told us to park our car and miraculously produced a 'residents pass' that he said...

I recently flew up to Joburg for a week's visit for press interviews and to do my first POWA payout. Since I have sold nearly 800 Future CD's, there is quite a bit of cash available to give to POWA.

Donna (my fabulous manager) collected me from the airport and after a quick lunch we headed to the POWA headquarters in Berea. It was quite an introduction to Joburg for me, as they are situated in the heart of Hillbrow and the surrounding area is pretty run down and poverty striken. It was real...

April 17, 2006 - A Girl In A Cafe

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
I just finished watching a movie that has left me deeply moved. A Girl In A Cafe is written & directed by Richard Curtis (4 Weddings & A Funeral) - need I say more - & features Kelly McDonald (Trainspotting) & Bill Knightly (Love Actually).  Watch it!!!

Apart from being a achingly real and awkard love story it also follows the politics involved in the recent G8 conference. The statistics on world poverty & hunger are staggering and heart breaking. This movie has something for everyone, but w...

Mimi2My LIVE YOUR DREAMS fund has helped its first artist!!!

Mimi Ntenjwa is a 25 year old honours graduate in Jazz Performance from UCT. She graduated with a first class pass last year and made a perfect choice to receive a helping hand in the next stage of her musical career.  In December she used her LIVE YOUR DREAMS funding to book a day in Paris Studios to record a 5 track demo. Her material is fresh, melodic, jazzy and beautifully African. I was so excited to listen to it last week and am b...

March 27, 2006 - Amazing Empowerment Project!!! -

WithkidsSo much has happened since I got home to Cape Town at the beginning of March that I am reeling from the magic that runs through life when we commit to being open!

A few days after getting home a friend of mine told me about a free holistic university that is being set up for 43 previously disadvantaged students - about 5 hours from Cape Town in a place called Karatara just outside Sedgefield.  I just had to go and see how I could help....

As of 3 weeks ago they arrived at th...

March 16, 2006 Loving London

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
Londoneye1_1  On March 2nd I touched down in London after a pretty painless flight from New York and it felt really great to be back in the big old city I called home 7 years ago.

It was awesome to get reacqainted with every that is London in the 5 days I was there - especially some very close friends I don't get to see quite enough of!  Needless to say my days were packed with catching up with everyone I could squeeze a visit to, and lots of celebrating was done in smokey pubs in Clapha...

March 06, 2006 - Nibbling on New York

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
Newyork On Wednesday March 1st, I found myself sitting in JFK airport waiting for my flight to London and have an incredibly satisfied feeling washing over me. Outside I could see my Aer Lingus plane with a bright green clover leaf on its tail and it felt like a fitting sign for my time in America and this last weekend in New York – so much LUCK!

New York sucked me off the speeding subway and spewed me headlong into its mad, heaving rush. After what now seems like a sleepy 5 m...

March 01, 2006 - Arriving In New York

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
Sarjulme Well, I arrived in New York on Friday 24th Feb from Nashville. Even my flight into the city was exciting. ...

My connection from Chicago had me sitting next two students on their way for a five day trip to NY. We got chatting, and before we knew it the two hour rather bumpy flight was over and we were firm friends. Sarah, Juliet and I decided to negotiate the shuttle and train journey together and it was wonderful to not be struggling with my bags all on my own....

March 01, 2006 - Farewell Nashville

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
Group2_2   Looking back at the girl who arrived in Miami last September, hired a car and drove across three states to find music city, I have come a long way! It has been an incredible adventure for me to be immersed in the deep south of America and to learn all things ‘Country’ from the ground up. As I started packing my bags last week I felt incredibly sad to be leaving the city I have called home for the last five months...

While Nashville might not have been the musical...

Whitedress3My vision is to inspire people with my work & to hopefully make a difference in the world I experience.

Sometimes I worry I may not be achieving that.

I received this message from a friend about the seeds we sow & whether or not we ever get to see the impact our work has on people's lives...

..."I wanted to say to you that the seeds you plant through your music you will likely never see grow.

When you reach someone with a...

February 16, 2006 - Give Love, Not Need

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries

Love is endless. Need is finite. Give love, not need.

Whitedress4_2

If you need something from someone, it implies you think you lack something. That is a scary proposition for another person to deal with. What if they don’t have what you need? What if they are lacking?

They don’t want to find out the answer to that. So what do they do? They squash your need to keep themselves safe. They don’t mean to do it to hurt you, they are just protecting themselves.

February 15, 2006 - Love Is

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
Water1_1 Love is a gift that can only be given if I am ready to receive it...

Love is not some distant prize for which I must quest.

Love lies deep within my chest, ready to awake when I let the light of my soul shine bright.

Love awaits my realization that I am love & all that I am is rooted in love.

The more love I allow to flow from myself, the sweeter the fruit my life shall bear.

Love is my journey, my destination, my symphony.

Love is the song that resonates through my bei...

February 07, 2006 - What's it all about?

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries

I walk around the grocery story and am overwhelmed with sadness when I see old people carefully selecting their groceries and checking the price. My heart feels like it will break, watching their wrinkled faces and shaking  hands as their bodies barely carry them up & down the aisles.

I am left wondering how it is that youth escapes us so suddenly and we are left redundant and desperately trying to hold on and get by. It is like the world just forgets we were ever here.

February 03, 2006 - Walking The Red Carpet

Posted by Verity on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : 2006 Blog Entries
Studio10 On January 13th I got to go to a VIP event for Country Music and Nascar in Nashville.  Iknew we had to get dressed up etc, but it was only when my house mate pulled up her car outside the venue and I saw hoards of screaming fans and television crews, that I realised this was a real deal 'red carpet' event.

It was freezing outside with swarms of valets to help guests etc, and I very uncooly got out the car while my friends were still getting themselves together, and so I had ...

January 31, 2006 - Feedback keeps me going!

Speaklivebe The best part about my Lucky Packet Project on my website is the cool feedback I get from people buying future copies of my album "Yet To Be". It keeps me motivated to keep on making this idea a reality.

It is only through encouragement that we find the courage to push our limits.  My committment to my journey is made stronger everytime someone takes the time to give me a thumbs up.  It is something I hope I do for everyone I believe in. It is easy to forget to tell people what we think of ...
