Picture_002I am still working with filmmakers Lungiswa Sithole and Yvonne Hart on the documentary “Our Own Stories in Our Own Voices”. After my initial visit to Atlantis on youth day in June, I recently headed out there again to start working more intensely with the girls in the program. The aim was for me to help them write a song about their experiences as teens in South Africa.

My amazing keyboard player Nelson, joined me for the day and was on hand to help with playing while we sang. There was a whole film crew there and it was daunting to say the least to sit down at a table with a camera on me and try to start writing a song. These things generally happen organically so under pressure it was interesting to try and keep the creative process flowing...

Picture_006The girls had written some beautiful poems & lyrics and finally things started to come together with a melody they had also been playing with. Within two hours we were all huddled around the piano with Nelson playing and each of us singing our parts. It sounded amazing! They managed to bring in some rap about the problem of TIK for teenagers as well as some beautiful vocals about having to live in abusive homes and wanting it to stop.

I think the next step will be to bring the girls to Cape Town and get them into a studio to record a demo of the song. I am hoping that as CD sales progress on my site I will have some money in the LiveYourDreams fund to put towards helping them.
