I used to love performing this song when Melissa Van Der Spuy and Gorm Helford played with me. They are amazing jazz musicians and they made this song really 'sing'. I really enjoy playing with words to get a concept across, and the idea of equating making good tea with making good love kinda tickled my fancy : )

This was one of the last songs I wrote before we recorded 'Journey' and I had fun playing with the idea of approaching life like an amateur poker player. It strikes me how often we play things safe because we are waiting for everything to be perfect, when in fact just taking action boldly and fearlessly usually gets a lot more done. And, it ensures you actually play the game and dont just hang back thinking about it : )

Cocoon was broken, butterfly hung afraid to fly
Blinded by all that – blinded by all that reminded
Too big to crawl back inside.

And the smoke poured in – honey soured by the heat,
Memories no longer so youthfully sweet
And I couldn’t help complete anything...

I wrote this after hearing about a young boy who was fostered by a friend of mine in Cape Town and then had to face the reality of home life in the Transkei in his holidays and domestic violence that was an everyday reality there. A huge wake up call for me at the time as to what so many South African families deal with and the overwhelming sense of not being able to rescue someone so young from facing the harsh side of life.
